Researcher of the HIERD, Ms. Katalin BANDER travelled to Brussels, on the 12th May 2014, to participate at the 37th meeting of the Standing Group on Indicators and Benchmarks.

Ms. Bander gathered information about recent changes (for example the new budget period, and the European elections) that will influence the activities of the Standing Group on Indicators and Benchmarks, an expert group for the development of educational indicators that should be taken into account by EU member states while planning education. She learned about Poland’s and Spain’s education policy changes, based on the results of international surveys, the former being related to literacy skills of adults, while the latter being centred around foreign language skills of students. Ms. Bander also listened to the reports of CEDEFOP, CRELL, Eurostat and Eurydice about their recent activities of data collection and analysis. Members of the SGIB commented on the Education and Training 2020 strategy as well, and the re-evaluation and further development of common European indicators (in the domain of foreign language skills, lifelong learning and entrepreneurship) were also discussed. These are the most important points of the meeting. As to the future, upcoming events include the publication of the TALIS 2013 results (Hungary did not participate this time), and the Education and Training Monitor 2014, which will be published in November.
