Since 2005 Eco-School (ES) title in Hungary serves the highest governmental recognition of those schools that deal with the practical realization of education for sustainable development (ESD) in a carefully considered, institutional and systematic way. An ES differs from the average school in the fact that the principles of sustainability are not only present in education but in all fields of school life. Local environmental issues and problems are dealt with priority in the schools’ pedagogical work. These problems form part of the school’s pedagogical work embedded in the local pedagogical program. The local community connects to ES work in many ways. Each and every aspect of school life is saturated with sustainability. Fortunately the number of ES has continuously grown since 2005 and now there are more than 500 Es in Hungary.
